about

Sweat Equity looks South for the last record of its summer release calendar, rounding out the sunny months with a sweltering selection of tracks from Savannah, Georgia’s one and only C Powers. A five-track dancefloor melter, Love Austerity brings the energy in abundance, and serves as a proper reintroduction to the artist.

Powers has remained a distinct voice in American underground for years, organizing parties and collective projects wherever he makes his home, always instilling his nights with an infectious sense of adventure that was immediately apparent to the fun-loving squad up north at Sweat Equity™ Corporate Headquarters. He’s thrown parties with GA mainstays TWINS and Boy Harsher as well as London’s Lobster Theremin head Jimmy Asquith, traded techniques with Night Slugs’s Helix, worked as the official DJ for the No Pain in Pop crew/label/blog, and wrote tracks for the stalwart net art/music project 18+, always bringing a focus on collaboration and mutual sharing that has consistently brought the best out of his musical partners. He also runs his own label/mix series, Mom Radio, with longtime collaborator CH-Rom, bringing, fittingly billed as a "a burning blinding supernova of groove, the point where the past and the future meet." We couldn't have said it better outselves.

Yet Powers’s skills as a producer in his own right stand out for their relentless sense of adventure and playfulness, walking through genres and ideas with a fluidity that speaks to his years behind the decks and his sense of just when to twist a concept towards the surreal, pulling dancefloors in and out of his twisted, endlessly compelling tracks. His records for CGI, Niche N’ Bump and Alliance Upholstery are perfect examples, wrapping vocal samples and skittering drum tracks through a sense of deep groove.

Love Austerity continues that vision, and (if we’re speaking from a personal perspective here), seems to have been tailor-made for the spirit and ethos of the Sweat Equity Crew: a vortex of breakbeat, techno, electro, and even the odd dash of boogie, always executed with heaps of style and flair that underscores the artist’s years as a DJ and dancer in the Deep South. These are American tracks, writ large against his region’s music history and his deep love of the tradition of the American underground. See if you can’t pick out the flickers of Florida Breaks in Breach of Sales, or the AM funk undertones of Love Austerity’s main riff. Yet it's his sense of fun, of what a great dance tune can do for the listener, that sets the record apart. Equal parts floor-fillers and earworms, the best parts of Love Austerity make a case for a dance music that seeks to push the possibilities of a crowded floor, of just what a track can do for the head, and for the body. But don't take our word for it ;D

Love Austerity is out August 24th.
