Sweat Equity is happy to present its latest release, Bell Curve’s Fucked Up If True. The debut EP from the recent New York transplant, out digitally this month, is a six-track crash course in the potentials for sculptural bass music, just in time for back to school season.

It’s been a solid year for Isabel Munson’s Bell Curve project, making the jump from Boston to New York and straight into a spot on the exceptional Sister Vol. 1 compilation (curated by FXWRK and Circe), all while readying her first batch of EP tracks. Pairing a honed sensibility for scorched earth breaks and depth-charge low end, Munson’s works as a producer pull her own tastes as a DJ through a shapeshifting, hyper-kinetic approach. Drawing on halftime jungle, grime, and dancehall, Munson’s work artfully dances around easy readings or genre classifications, instead pushing each track’s evolving grooves outside their comfort zone.

The tracks are a lesson in meditative, precise attention to detail, allowing long percussive patterns to weave and twist around each other, weaving a dense tapestry of syncopations and grooves that serve as a restless counterpoint to the swells and swirls of bass fleshing out each track. It’s a slab of patient sonic sculpting, mixing together lush synth work with razors edge rhythmic elements that take a psychedelic spin on easy genre readings or familiar signifiers. Intently focused on movement and progression, F.U.I.T. carries some a serious cognitive payload, while never losing site of each track’s potential and purpose on the dancefloor, its mind-altering capacities stemming from an almost endless series of rhythmic permutations and changes that leave you miles from where you started.
